Article: Half-Term Fishing Fun in the Fens

Half-Term Fishing Fun in the Fens

Half-Term Fishing Fun in the Fens

Right then, with the leaves turning and the mornings getting crisper, autumn is a cracker of a time to wet a line. Out here in the Fenland region, the rivers, drains, and lakes are fishing brilliantly. The fish are in cracking shape, having fully recovered from spawning, and are on the munch as they stack up grub for the winter. That means they’re often a bit more forgiving with your hookbait than in the pressured summer months.

So, forget the screens and the same-old routine this half-term. Seriously, get the kids out on the bank. We’re all too aware that life's gone a bit too digital, and letting your youngster spend a few hours with a rod in their hands is the perfect antidote. It's not just a nice day out; fishing is pure, natural escapism and a proper digital detox. The Angling Trust is even pushing for fishing to be recognised as a mental health therapy by the NHS—it’s that good for the busy little minds of adults and children alike. It calms them down, teaches them patience, and gives them a hands-on lesson in nature you just can’t get from a textbook.

 Keeping it Simple, Fenland Style

When you’re taking a nipper, keep the kit simple. You don't need a heap of fancy gear, which is where our range of affordable fishing tackle comes in. A short pole setup is spot on for beginners; fewer tangles and kids love watching a float disappear. Don’t go chasing monsters straight away. Focus on getting bites and catching the smaller stuff, like the ever-obliging Fenland perch—they're a cracking species to start with. Every fish is a personal best in the early days!

A few tips for success:

  • Chairs are Gold: You’ll be busy, but they need somewhere comfy to sit. Lightweight chairs are essential.

  • Warm Kids = Longer Sessions: Getting cold is game over. Woolly hats, a good waterproof, and extra socks are the most important bits of kit. Being snug keeps everyone happy.

  • Snack Attack: Pack loads of grub and drink. When the bites slow down, a good snack keeps the smiles on.

  • Fish Care First: This is where we show them how it’s done. Always use an unhooking mat and a net, and teach them to handle the fish with wet hands and get them back safely. This becomes second nature quickly.

New to Fishing? Help is at Hand

If you’re a parent who’s never dipped a line before, don’t fret about getting started! A local fishing tackle shop is your best friend for honest advice and simple starting gear. Even better, there are loads of organised introductory and coaching events running throughout the country.

Look up the Canal & River Trust’s “Let’s Fish!” events or the Angling Trust’s “Spring into Fishing” sessions. These are often free and they sort out all the gear, bait, and licences for you. You can use the search tools on their websites to find a nearby event, which typically runs from spring through summer and is perfect for children aged six and up.

In particular, we’ve worked closely with the fantastic team at Everybody Can Fish, who run brilliant teach-ins, taster sessions, and summer schools throughout the region. They get superb feedback from participants of all ages and abilities. Get yourself booked onto one of those days—it’s the easiest way to start fishing.
