Hooked for Life: Take The Kids on Their First Fenland Fishing Adventure
The last bank holiday is here, and with the sun still shining, it's the perfect time to get the kids outdoors and onto the bank for a fishing trip. There's no better way to make lasting memories of their summer holiday before they head back to school in September. We know what you're thinking—getting started with fishing can seem a bit daunting, but it's simpler and more affordable than you might think. Fenland Tackle Exchange is here to help you get kitted out with everything you need for a fantastic day by the water.
Getting Started: Tackle for Beginners
First things first, let's talk about the gear. You don't need to break the bank to catch your first fish. A simple, reliable setup is all you need. For youngsters, we recommend a basic float fishing rig. It's a classic method that's easy to understand and incredibly effective.
Start with a sturdy Waggler float. The name might sound a bit daft, but it's a brilliant bit of kit. We have a selection of durable wagglers that are (virtually!) indestructible, perfect for little hands that might be a bit heavy-handed. You'll need some fishing line to go with it. A 4lb or 6lb breaking strain line is a good all-rounder, strong enough to handle a small carp or a decent-sized tench, yet thin enough to be discreet in the water.
Next up, you'll need some hooks. A size 14 or 16 hook is ideal for catching a range of fish like roach, rudd, and even small perch. We recommend a pack of pre-tied hooks to nylon. They come ready to go, so you don't have to fuss with tying tiny knots. A few small split shot to 'shot' the float and a disgorger for unhooking are also essential. Our Fenland Tackle Exchange Starter Kits contain all these bits and bobs, making it a no-brainer for new anglers.
The Bait You'll Need
When it comes to bait, keep it simple. For a first trip, you can't go wrong with classic baits that fish simply can't resist. Sweetcorn, straight from a tin, is a fantastic option. It's cheap, easy to use, and a brilliant hook bait. Fish love the vibrant colour and sweet smell.
Another winner is maggots. While some might find them a bit wriggly, they are a superb bait for catching just about anything that swims. A small tub of red and white maggots will go a long way. You can even use them to introduce a few free offerings to the water before you cast your line.
Finding a Fishing Spot
The fenland region is a paradise for anglers. We're lucky to have an abundance of rivers, drains, and lakes teeming with fish. For a beginner's trip, a local canal or drain is often the best choice. They're easily accessible and usually hold plenty of smaller fish, which is perfect for building confidence. The Forty Foot Drain or the Old River Nene near March are great places to start. Always check the rules and regulations for the specific venue you're fishing.
Get Your Free Rod Licence!
Here's a tip that can save you some money: remember that if your kids are under 16, their Environment Agency rod licence is absolutely free. You just need to register them for one. And if you're taking a friend or an older child, you can use the Take a Friend Fishing Scheme, which we proudly support. They'll get a free day licence, so there's no excuse not to get them out on the bank.
